Your garage door code is your first line of security. Here's how and why to change it.
You might already know it, but in case you don't โ your garage door has a secret! That secret is an internal code it uses to communicate with the motor unit to open the door for you. The main purpose? Security, of course!
There are many reasons you might want to change your code. Many people feel more comfortable once in a new home to make sure no one else has access to their garage. It adds privacy and makes your home a little more yours.
Even though it is exceedingly rare, break-ins through the garage are actually a preferred route of entry. If it has happened to you or someone you know, changing the code ensures it won't happen again.
And of course, we all have times when we forget passwords and codes. When you're locked out of your own garage, it's time to reset.
Safety first! Grab a ladder and place it underneath your garage door motor. Locate the "Learn" or "Program" button on the motor unit โ it's usually a small colored button. Press and hold it until the indicator light turns off. Then, enter your new code on the keypad and press "Enter." Test the new code to make sure it works.
Changing your code will not affect the operation of your garage door. Once you're done, everything will work as normal โ just with a new, secure code that only you know.
